Forest Risom & Restory in Jecheon, Chungcheongbuk-do, is becoming a popular summer holiday destination. Located in a virgin forest at the foot of Mount Juron (906m), the resort offers a cooler environment with an average summer temperature of 1-2 degrees Celsius, and 70% of the site is forested, making for a relaxing holiday with nature.

Forest Risom & Restore offers a range of wellness programmes to heal the body and mind. Families can also experience the natural vegetation in the indoor forest, while the children's water play area and spa provide fun for the whole family.

RE:O, Forest Lissom's leisure entertainment crew, also organises various wellness programmes, including meditation, yoga and tea meditation classes. This allows visitors to spend time in nature to heal their minds and bodies, and to relax and forget the stresses of everyday life.

The future of wellness and medical tourism: the need for a new Jeonnam National Medical University

Jeollanam-do has been actively seeking to attract a national medical university to improve the poor medical environment and secure the right to health for its residents. The government has announced its intention to quickly build a national medical school in Jeonnam, and the province must now hold a fair competition to select a university.

With the president, prime minister, and ministers of education and health and welfare having stated that the province will move forward with the establishment of the medical school based on input from Jeonnam, the final step is for the province to select the final university through a public competition. However, the city of Suncheon has been clinging to its insistence on hosting its own medical school, which is hindering the province's rational process.

Jeonnam's medical tourism infrastructure is currently inadequate, making it difficult for the province to fulfil its key role in K-medical tourism. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the number of foreign patients travelling to South Korea exceeded 600,000 last year, and the government aims to attract 700,000 by 2027. However, Jeonnam, which does not have a medical university, is not ready for medical tourism and faces a major challenge in attracting tourists.

Jeonnam's natural environment and abundant humanities resources make it an ideal location to build a medical tourism cluster. Therefore, the establishment of a national medical university is an important opportunity for the future growth of Jeonnam, which requires swift promotion and win-win cooperation. The establishment of Jeollanam-do National Medical University in 2026 will help Jeollanam-do become a centre for sustainable development and wellness tourism.

Harmonising wellness and nature: exploring Mindungsan in summer

Mindungsan Mountain in summer is emerging as a destination that offers wellness and nature in harmony. At 1119 metres above sea level, Mindungsan is located in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do, and is named for the lack of trees on the top. The mountain is famous for its autumn mugwort, but it is just as charming in summer.

Jeongseon has recently gained popularity as a wellness tourism destination, and Mindungsan Mountain is no exception to this trend, becoming popular with summer visitors. The mountain is characterised by its limestone terrain and dolines, and the lush grasslands and cool breezes that form here complete the summer wellness experience.

In Zhengshan, where it still rains frequently during the hot summer months, Mindung Mountain offers an even more unique experience. The dolines and tranquil meadows formed by the limestone terrain in particular provide a sense of coolness and healing in the heat of summer. The trail is steep at the beginning, but once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Great White Mountains and the deep dolines.

This summer, Mindung Mountain is a place where wellness and nature are in harmony, further highlighting its value as a summer healing destination. If you're looking for a harmonious encounter with nature, Mindung Mountain is the place for you.

Wellness and rural decline: a new turn in food tourism

As small towns disappear and Gangwon Province becomes a super-aged society, population decline is accelerating. Young people are leaving for big cities, and the problem of rural decline seems serious. However, 'food tourism' is proposed as a way to overcome this crisis, and Gangwon Province is trying to combine wellness and gourmet tourism through 'Gangwon + Michelin'.

Food is a key factor in travel, and a recent survey found that 60 percent of travellers value food tourism. This trend is also driven by the fact that food that reflects local culture and identity is a key motivator for tourism. Food tourism is also playing an important role in addressing the issue of regional decline, as seen in the case of Japan. Japan is using its local gastronomic culture to boost tourism and revitalise the local economy.

In Korea, food tourism is booming in Busan and Daegu, and the trend is spreading to Gangwon Province. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization have selected Chuncheon Dakgalbi, Hwaseong Hanwoo, Gangneung Chodang Sundubu, and Pyeongchang Sanchae as national food tourism contents to promote regional tourism. As such, food tourism is playing an important role in overcoming the crisis of regional attrition, revitalising the economy, and increasing the number of related populations.

Gangwon-do is presenting a new tourism model by utilising local gastronomic resources and combining them with wellness tourism through 'Gangchulin'. These efforts are expected to help revitalise the local economy and overcome the threat of extinction.

Wellness and Overcoming Regional Disappearance: Dongshin University's Vision for Establishing UCC

Dongshin University President Lee Joo-hee has proposed a new educational model, the University Community Collaboration (UCC), emphasising the collaboration between universities, local governments, and industry to overcome the rural decline and rural crisis. "Only when regions are alive can universities live and nations grow," Lee said, adding that the establishment of the UCC will enable the university to be selected as one of the government's 30 Global Universities.

UCC is a win-win shared university established by Dongshin University, Chodang University, and Mokpo University of Science and Technology, and plans to build campuses in Jeonnam city and county and overseas. The university plans to introduce flexible degree systems such as the no-major, no-department system and the ternary degree system to foster talent tailored to the region. The tertiary degree system is divided into bachelor's, professional bachelor's, and post-bachelor's courses, and will foster professional talents needed for regional specialised businesses.

'N-campuses' will be established in each city and county in Jeonnam to provide education tailored to local specialised industries, while UCC's overseas campuses will serve as global hubs. These UCCs are focused on overcoming the crisis of regional attrition and fostering the human resources needed to respond to future industries such as wellness. Through this model, Dongshin University will revitalise local economies and strengthen the link between education and industry.

Wellness and psychological healing, EZ&Wellness '4233 Mind Centre' opens Busan 2nd store

'4233 Mind Centre', an experiential psychological exhibition space operated by mental healthcare specialist EZ&Wellness (CEO Kang Min-jae), will open its second store in Gwangalli, Busan, in July. The Busan Gwangalli branch, which opened after the Yeonnam branch in Seoul, is an 'action-based experiential psychological exhibition space' where two people such as lovers, couples, friends, and family can participate together to understand their relationship and share healing experiences.

The name '4233 Mind Centre' combines the number 33, which means people, and the number 42, which represents relationships. Visitors can move through various rooms with a total of 11 missions, and spend about 60 to 70 minutes to understand their own and other people's preferences and values through various game-type psychological diagnoses and experiential activities.

The Yeonnam branch in Seoul has been popular as a 'Hongdae exotic date spot' and has set a record for selling out among couples. The Gwangalli branch in Busan has also attracted great interest, with more than 2,000 pre-bookings before opening. At the Busan branch, customers can receive interpretive counselling services from psychological experts and photos and videos of the experience via QR code. The programme is structured in a different way from the Yeonnam branch.

New trends in wellness, ultra-aging society, and senior healthcare solutions

As the world's population ages, seniors are increasingly concerned about their health and well-being. In response, industries are offering a wide range of products and services to lead the senior care market. In particular, companies are focusing on supporting seniors' healthy minds and bodies.

Daesang Welllife, a company specialising in balanced nutrition for patients, has launched the New Care Joint Plan. The product is designed to help seniors effectively manage their musculoskeletal health by including NAG (N-acetylglucosamine), a joint and cartilage functional ingredient, protein, calcium, and magnesium. It provides a quick and easy way to supplement their health.

Lifestyle wellness company Jinam offers a customised diet programme for active seniors through its Go:Yo Wellness Centre. The programme provides one-on-one consultation and personal coaching to help seniors achieve healthy weight management and improve their body shape, based on their constitution, body type and lifestyle. Depending on your goals, you can choose from a variety of themes, including "male," "female," and "older brother.

To support seniors' social interactions, SINOL has launched a separate app to support social interaction. The SINOL app 2.0 separates the existing gathering community and meeting arrangement functions into SINOL (Senior Playground) and SIRUP (Senior Love). This allows users to choose the service that suits them and to join and apply for meetings in a one-stop shop. Sinol will support seniors' new relationships and contribute to improving their quality of life.

Innovative senior care solutions such as this one are part of a growing emphasis on wellness and healthcare in the face of a super-aged society, and we are stepping up our efforts to help seniors live happily ever after.

Hanwha Group's Jeju tourism development at the centre of wellness and controversy

Hanwha Group's development of a large-scale tourism complex in the mid-mountainous region of Jeju has become increasingly controversial. The Aewol Forest tourism complex is expected to be completed by 2036 with an investment of KRW 1.7 trillion on 1.25 million square metres of land. The project includes various wellness and cultural facilities, including a theme park, work vacation lounge, and energy station.

Jeju Island said it has started the strategic environmental impact assessment process for the project and is in the early stages of development. However, the project has been met with controversy. Much of the development site is natural greenery and forest, raising concerns about the destruction of greenery and environmental impact. Jeju Island is already home to large tourism complexes such as the Aewol International Cultural Complex and Jeju Mythology World, and it has been pointed out that the development could exacerbate the oversupply of accommodation.

In addition, the project area is designated as a special groundwater management area, which means that large-scale water use could cause water supply pressure problems. In addition, the project is designated as a development promotion zone using a special exemption for conservation management areas, but this has been criticised as allowing development in areas that are not meant for development.

In the Strategic Environmental Impact Statement, the developer emphasised the new initiative by referring to the increasing demand for 'wellness tourism', but in reality, it is criticised for consisting of similar facilities to existing Jeju tourist destinations. In this respect, the development is likely to become even more controversial in the coming administrative process.

Wellness and pets, the new trend of 'pet total wellness care'

The growing interest in the health and wellness of pets has led to the rise of 'total wellness care'. This trend reflects the tendency to extend wellness concepts that apply to humans to pets. Recently, the industry has seen the emergence of services that consider not only the physical health of pets but also their emotional well-being.

Through its pet health management app, TeeTeeCare, AIPOPET has partnered with Fear Free, a US-based animal behaviour education organisation. Fear Free is an educational programme developed by experts in animal behaviour and is exclusively available in Korea with Korean subtitles. The programme is designed to help pets' emotional stability and well-being.

The company also introduced PetPulse, an AI-powered wearable device. The device analyses the voices of more than 110 dog breeds to recognise emotions with an accuracy of more than 90%, and helps you understand and connect with your pet's emotional state. The technology won the CES 2021 Innovation Award.

Dong-A Pharmaceutical launched a pet nutrition product through Bepple. Bepple is designed to manage not only physical health but also emotional stability, including patented ingredients 'Immunoheal' to boost immunity and L-theanine to help reduce stress.

These 'pet total wellness care' services are part of a growing trend towards holistic management of pets' physical and emotional health, and are expected to continue to grow in demand.

Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do, has reorganised its culture and tourism welfare bureau on 1 July to create a broader and more detailed cultural and tourism welfare policy. The new organisation consists of the Culture and History Division, Tourism and Sports Division, Social Welfare Division, and the newly created Population and Family Division to promote regional development with a more integrated and comprehensive approach.

They are focusing on increasing the local population by improving infrastructure and institutions to attract new people, as well as the Wanju Love Address Campaign.

In the field of culture and tourism, various festivals and cultural events are planned with the aim of attracting 30 million visitors. The 12th Wild & Local Food Festival, which will be held from 4 to 6 October, is set to be a big hit with enhanced activity programmes and local food offerings. The city is also leveraging its DMOs to boost economic impact through local tourism and sports marketing.

The sports industry is also an important part of the programme, with disabled facilities and children's gymnasiums being built. The city also plans to host national and world championships and strives to ensure that the local population enjoys sports welfare.

The city is also striving to foster culture, working with cultural organisations to create an artistic city and promote cultural branding of Wanju-gun.

In addition, it plans to reduce welfare blind spots through meticulous welfare policies based on AI, and to realise welfare that is close to the lives of residents by strengthening benefits tailored to low-income earners and support for the disabled.

Kim Chun-man, head of the Culture, Tourism and Welfare Bureau, said, "We will enhance the attractiveness of the region through culture, tourism and sports, and create a future happy city with a population of 100,000 that enjoys the lives of residents through meticulous welfare policies."
